Current Situation

A key tenet of Smart Cities is improved transparency, accountability, and government-community engagement. “Open data” was the original mechanism to improve trust and transparency via opening up data sets to the public and spurring the development of municipal services by the private sector.

Goals and Objectives

The goals include improving civic engagement, tracking performance, sharing data within and outside government across multiple sectors, and providing the platform for an exchange or marketplace for data sets.

Technology Deployed

Content and data management software for indexing, cataloguing and publishing data; search tools; content analytics; dashboards; and a portal/platform for an ecosystem of participants

Use Case Summary

Metadata-driven platforms catalogue, aggregate, and publish data for the express purpose of sharing data online with those outside and inside government. Many of these solutions provide data visualization and dashboards, accompanied by policies or guidelines on what data is published and how the data can be used, shared, and referenced.
