Maker Spaces and Virtual Labs

Current Situation

Students and faculty often work together on physical design projects but their spaces not optimized for collaboration and work. Students travel to physical lab facilities to participate on experiments using consumable materials and are limited by resource constraints.

Goals and Objectives

Create maker spaces within the campus environment that provide access to specialized and expensive tools (e.g., 3D printing and laser measurement) that might not be available in other environments. Virtual laboratory experiences provide students with anywhere access to a lab collaborative space.

Technology Deployed

Enterprise hardware, personal devices, AR/VR viewers, 3D printers, modules/sensors, drones, robots, learning management systems, IaaS

Use Case Summary

Maker spaces amplify collaboration opportunities between faculty and students. Students participate in hands-on laboratory sessions in a virtual environment not requiring physical presence or scarce consumable resources. It also enables continuity of lab operations when onsite presence is not possible.
