Micromobility

Current Situation

Micromobility vehicles (also called personal mobility devices [PMDs]) like bicycles, scooters, and mopeds have become increasingly popular in the past few years. As demand for micromobility services continues to gain favor, a wide variety of mobility ecosystem companies, such as railways and ride-hailing companies, are investing in these services.

Goals and Objectives

Policymakers, who until early 2020 were very much concerned about safety and loitering challenges due to the proliferation of micromobility vehicles, have responded to COVID-19 by rethinking transportation infrastructure to accelerate the usage of scooters, bicycles, and mopeds, because they offer not only ease of use, convenience, affordability, healthy exercise, environmental sustainability, and fun but also social distancing.

Technology Deployed

Hardware: Automated locks, GPS trackers, and electric charging sensors installed on micromobility vehicles

Software: CRM, contactless payment systems, booking systems, fleet management systems

Services: Business and IT services

Use Case Summary

Micromobility is expanding. Cities and communities that want to leverage the benefits are regulating rider safety, adapting urban spaces, and promoting data sharing about micromobility usage patterns across the ecosystem to ensure quality and equal access to services and optimize traffic.
